Dive deep into foreign languages

The original idea for StoryPlanet began taking shape in the summer of 2013. In the meantime, a lot has happened. We′ve been done extensive research, been to fairs, talked to experts, negotiated with partners, hired consultants – this was mostly self-funded, but also partly enabled thanks to an EFRE-grant, kindly provided by the cultural office of the city of Offenbach.

To match future public funds we have been offered, we are currently looking for investors and internationally-minded partners (e.g. from the publishing, technology, and e-commerce sectors) to join in on the StoryPlanet initiative.

The StoryPlanet app alone – involving the cooperation of two universities and a handful of full-time programmers over the course of two years – has a projected overall scope exceeding 1,000,000 euros. Instead of waiting for the financing to finish coming together, we have begun building key elements of the project:

a simple yet powerful vocabulary training app for iPhone and iPad with an Android app to follow. Imagine a vocabulary list that always has a sentence showing you how the word is used in context. And you actually have to spell the word before it is considered really learned. Become a beta tester for learning German or English vocabulary

learn German with the classic Grimm fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood”, true to the original line by line, but modernized and simplified for beginning learners. A 13-minute voice recording is accompanied by subtitles in two languages and evocative illustrations. Watch a trailer of the first minute of animation here (status August 2014)  Become a beta tester for learning German

while content cannot yet be purchased via the StoryPlanet app, we have already begun collecting reviews and recommendations for books suitable for learning foreign languages. These will go online shortly. Get informed when an online shop becomes available for the language(s) you are learning.

All of the above are endeavors we can achieve without outside financing – through them all, we are also building key elements for the later StoryPlanet app.

But StoryPlanet is much more than “just” an app. It is a vision for a new, more intuitive and personalized way of learning languages. We see StoryPlanet as a brand with the following aims:

  • to create stories (see Rotkäppchen above)
  • to curate stories
  • to promote stories (see StoryPlanet online bookstores above)
  • to develop language learning tools for self-learners (see vobot above)
  • to develop language learning tools for teachers
  • to provide a platform for learners and teachers to interact with each other
  • to develop, curate and promote travel packages for language learners

The StoryPlanet journey is just at its beginning. But we’re already blazing new trails and making an impact.

Are you a bookseller?

Language learners buy books, audiobooks, textbooks, dictionaries. They are a unique customer group that StoryPlanet would like to drive to local booksellers: to buy your products, attend your readings, as well as to connect with other learners and teachers in your network. We are currently also looking for partner bookstores to act as sales channels in diverse markets around the world.

Not everyone who wants to learn a foreign language can afford to buy extra books or the technology required to use sophisticated self-study tools. Many of the books recommended on StoryPlanet are available in libraries, and we would like to refer local readers to make use of them.
